Staying Fit; exercising tips

October 8, 2010

Last week I discussed the lack of exercise that college students have. This week I will give you tips to help make your exercise routine more fun and make you more active.

Tip #1- Walk or bike to class

This is a small campus so driving to HT from the apartments would just be lazy. There are also bikes you can rent outside of Stockdale for 24 hours. Rent a bike and ride it around town for the day. This can be a fun way to stay in shape.

Tip #2- Join an intramural or club sport

There are many options here. This can be an easy way to make new friends while staying active. Intramurals on campus include; Co-ed (4 on 4) sand volleyball, ultimate frisbee, a bowling and tennis tournament, wrestling, 3 point shoot-out, 3 on 3 women’s basketball, 5 on 5 men’s basketball, and a dodgeball league or tournament. The club sports available on campus are; women and men’s water polo, women’s lacrosse, men’s volleyball, and wrestling. I’ve joined women’s water polo and it’s a great way to stay in shape and it’s also fun because I met a lot of new friends by joining.

Tip #3- Go for a walk with your friends

Stay active and catch up with your friends at the same time. The walk around campus is a little over a mile but can be fast if you’re going with friends. It’s also a close walk to County Market, ShopKo, and for the ladies, the tanning salon. So you can get your exercise in while getting some shopping done or getting you tan!

Tip #4- Take a fitness class or course

This can be a learning way to stay in shape and earn credit for it. There are many classes offered such as weight training classes, golf classes, swimming classes, and tennis classes offered on campus. I took a weight training class last year and it not only taught me how to properly use all the machines in the Trotter Fitness Center, but it also taught me what machines worked each muscle. This can help you to know what muscles you want to target and get toned.

Tip #5- Check out the Trotter Fitness Center

We are so lucky to have such a nice place to work out! The Huff offers a lot of places for exercise, including the indoor track and basketball courts, and the swimming pool. There isn’t an excuse for students not to work out when we have such a great facility. The Trotter also offers many classes during the school year, such as yoga, cardio, kickboxing, and dancing.

There you have it! There’s no more excuses for you not to exercise anymore. So grab a friend and head on over to the Trotter, or on a walk, and start being active today. BY KELSEY BESHEARS
