Cross-country having a strong year

November 5, 2010

The Monmouth College Cross-country team placed high at the Midwest Conference Cross-country Championships, which was held on Oct. 30. The women placed 2nd and the men 4th out of 10 teams. Jon Welty and Geoff Bird, received All-Conference Honors.

The next step is the NCAA Midwest Regional, which will be held at Augustana College on Nov. 13. This meet is where teams and individuals can qualify for the national meet, which will be held on Nov. 20 at Wartburg College.

“No qualifiers yet, but Mary Kate Beyer is a two time NCAA qualifier and Geoff Bird placed 2nd at the MWC meet making him a strong individual possibility for the men,” said coach Roger Haynes.

“Overall we have had a pretty successful season. Most of the team’s individual goals were met and we feel that we had a successful year in the aspect of becoming more of a team in a sport that most see as an individual sport,” said Welty.

“Our teams have had very good seasons. Our conference performances were solid, but I think both teams had higher hopes for their conference finishes. We were good at the MWC meet, but not great,” said Haynes.

“Great distance running does not happen overnight, it takes a long time to fully develop as a distance runner. Hopefully the best is yet to come for these runners,” said Haynes.

For next year, the running Scots will have no troubles reaching their goals. The men will return five of the top seven runners and the women six of the top seven for next season. Both teams will return solid runners with big meet experience.
