Football defeats Lawrence 56-0 in blowout game

September 23, 2011

Justin Frye/The Courier - Senior running back Nick Law runs through three members of the Lawrence defense. Law helped Scots rack up 682 offensive yards at the game Saturday against Lawrence and scored a touchdown in the second quarter to put the Scots up 21-0. The team was 16 yards short of reaching an all-time Monmouth record for football.

The Monmouth College Fighting Scots had their second blowout game of the season against Lawrence University.

After the football team’s close match up to Lawrence University last year, winning 30-25 after a 24-point third quarter, the Scots take down Lawrence 56-0 making this the second week Monmouth College has threatened its own records.

Not only did the team blow-out Lawrence but the Blackout for Easter Seals raised approximately $3,750. This amount was established before the manufacturer of the t-shirt has been paid. Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor Melissa Bittner hopes to raise more money next year.

“We still have a few t-shirts for sale if people would like to purchase them. I would also like to give big thanks to SAAC for helping sell and promote the event,” said Bittner. “SAAC will also be selling t-shirts for the Turkey Bowl Game against Knox.”

The game started off with a nine play touchdown which was one of three touchdowns by running back Trey Yocum. Quarterback Alex Tanney threw a 61 yard pass to Yocum to score the Scots first touchdown of the game.

Wide receiver Mike Blodgett was also close to beating an all-time record that was set by Matt Shepherd from 2008-10. He had a career high of 202 receiving yards making him  100 yards from Shepherds record.

Tanney passed over 300 yards against Lawrence. He had 25-of-30 passes caught for 371 yards and three touchdowns.

Linebacker Preston Lumzy also led the team in tackles. He had nine tackles and two sacks.

During the game the team racked up 682 yards for offense which was just 16 yards short of an all-time record for Monmouth College.

Not only did the team almost beat an all-time school record but the team was awarded many achievements after Saturday’s game.

Tanney was named Beyond Sports College Network’s (BSN) Offensive Player of the Week. Only six players from Division III have been honored with Offensive Player of the Week.

According to a press release by Dan Nolan, “The 6-foot-4 signal-caller recorded his second straight 300-yard passing game, completing 25 of 30 throws for 371 yards and three touchdowns. His longest completion – a 73-yard catch-and-run to Mike Blodgett – put the Scots up 35-0 late in the second quarter. Averaging more than 330 yards per game, Tanney is on pace to break the NCAA Division III passing record by the end of the season. He currently has 11,385 and needs just over 2,200 yards for the record.”

Along with Tanney, Yocum received Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the week. He ran 166 yards in only three quarters during Saturday’s game.

Yocum averaged over eight yards per carry in the three quarters he played. He averages over 144 yards and two touchdowns per game. Yocum also scored three touchdowns over the course of the game.

Tanney explains the team’s strategy for the game.

“We stressed all week being able to come out in the second half and finish a game unlike the Grinnell game where we bogged down in the 3rd quarter.  And I think we took care of business and put them away early in the third so our younger guys could get in there and play,” said Tanney.

The Scots will face Illinois College this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.

The Fighting Scots have a 14 game winning streak against the Blue Boys of Illinois College, which began in 1997.
