Scots Cross Country Sweeps Weekend Meet

October 16, 2011

MONMOUTH, Ill. – In the final race before the Midwest
Conference Cross Country Championships, the Monmouth College men’s and women’s
teams won their races at Saturday’s Illinois College Invitational.

The Fighting
Scots men outran their 13-team field in the 8K race while the women posted the
win at the 6K distance in the 10-team field. It was the second straight year
the Scots have won both races.

The men were
paced by a strong pack that ran the college’s honor roll times for the Nichols
Park course. Jon Welty’s 26:06 placed him second just one second ahead of Jake
Barr. A 26:39 by Matt Gatlin was fast enough for sixth and Paul Davies’ time of
26:46 put him in eighth place. Derek Foley rounded out the honor roll times in
15th position with a 27:36.

Joe Levita and
Nate Jones finished the scoring for Monmouth in 17th and 31st places. Levita
toured the course in 27:49 and Jones clocked a 29:37.

The rest of the
Monmouth men were led by Dan Reid’s 28:52 which placed him 38th. Jeff Nieslawki
was 45th in 29:22.  Brian Daly ran a
29:30 for a 49th place finish and Dan Carlson was 64th in 30:24.

Led by Rachel
Bowden, the Scots’ women placed six runners in the top 10. Bowden’s 23:07
placed her second in front of Tori Beaty’s third-place time of 23:23.

Brittany Frazier
led the pack of four to close out the top 10. Frazier’s 24:00 was good for
fifth, just four seconds ahead of sixth-place Marlee Lane who improved her time
from a year ago by nearly a half-minute. Alyssa Edwards and Kyra Kimber
finished 8-9. Edwards clocked a 24:14 and Kimber checked in with a 24:26.
Kenzie Payton rounded out the women in 38th position with a 26:41.

The Scots will
now go into training mode for the MWC Championships to be held at Ripon, Wis.,
on Oct. 29.
