Monmouth Women Lose With Grit In Basketball NCAA Division III Regional

March 3, 2012

Monmouth fought back from a 20-point second half deficit but couldn’t get past No. 2 ranked University of Chicago Maroons and fell in their inaugural NCAA Regional game 75-68. After hitting just 22 percent in the first half, the Scots heated up in the second 20 minutes, but not before the Maroons had fashioned a seemingly comfortable double-digit lead eight minutes into the second half. Monmouth trimmed it to a dozen six minutes later when Paige Nord nailed a 3-pointer to complete a 10-2 run. Chicago surged ahead again following the Scots’ run and led 71-55 with 2:02 left before Monmouth sprinted to the finish. Zipporah Williams converted a pair of free throws and a bucket on her way to a 14-point, 10-rebound night and Marla Willard hit two free throws as she scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half to go with 11 boards, pulling Monmouth within 10, 71-61, with a minute to go. Haley Jones then buried a trey to finish with 17 points before fouling out with 18 seconds left. The game ended the Scots’ first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
