MC aquatics end season with flourish

February 22, 2013

Kim Fornero / The Courier - Led by junior Gabe Baginski, Monmouth swimming & diving recorded 39 lifetime best at the MWC Championships.

The Fighting Scots had an impressive finish to their season this past weekend when they took to the water for the Midwest Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

“We have been preparing them for this meet all year through our training schedule. We taught the team that they cannot dwell on how sore and tired they are,” said head coach Alex de la Pena. “We worked on creating mental toughness and confidence and it showed in how they swam each race. Each day they needed to refocus themselves and understand that they had another race to tackle.”

And tackle the race they did. The Scots posted 13 new school records, 13 All-Midwest Conference performances and 57 new “top ten times” in program history with Gabe Baginski grabbing a first place finish to end the weekend.

Underclassmen Erin Willhite and Steph Komaniecki rewrote the record book, each capturing three new school records.

Willhite’s came in the women’s 50, 100 and 200 free, while Komaniecki made Monmouth history in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free.

Baginski, along with his first place finish in the 100 free, obtained school records in the 50 and 200 free for MC.

With the season officially over, the Scots look forward to the off-season, where approximately 85-90 percent of de la Pena’s swimmers will participate in the now varsity water polo program.
