Men’s tennis edged by No. 20 Carthage

The Fighting Scots men’s tennis team lost a close match. On Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Racine Indoor Racquet and Fitness Club, the men’s tennis team took on Carthage College.

Six Fighting Scots took to the court for singles and doubles matches against the Red Men. In the first singles match of the day, Jeff Lotz Jr. of Carthage defeated Chris Franco by a score of 6-2,6-3. Dave Johnson pulled out the first Scots singles win of the day by defeating Alex Boomgarden 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The only other singles triumph for MC came from freshman Marco Franco when he defeated Carthage’s Juan Robles in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. The Scots dropped four of their six singles matches on the day.

However, doubles play was saw more victories. Monmouth started off strong when the duo of Johnson and David Stewart defeated the Carthage tandem of Lotz Jr. and Boomgarden by a tally of 9-8 (9-5).

The next doubles contest saw the sibling pair of Marco and Chris Franco defeat the Carthage duo of Brandon Curtis and Conor Moon 8-5. In the final doubles match of the day, Monmouth’s Alex King and Andrew Shiakallis fell to Carthage’s Ryan Jump and Brian Howes.

The Scots were edged out with a total of five matches to four. The men’s tennis squad travels to Wabash College on Saturday, Feb. 23, to take on the Little Giants.
