Crandall earns MWC honor, MCSB off to fast start

March 22, 2013

Monmouth softball and baseball made their annual spring break excursions to Florida, looking to improve before the start of the conference season.

Record-wise, the teams finished on opposite ends of the spectrum, but each felt optimistic for the upcoming season.

“We didn’t come home with the record we thought we would, but we actually had a very good trip,” said MC baseball head coach Roger Sander. “We are further along than we were with last year’s team.” Ryan Crandall’s 18-36 effort at the plate earned him MWC Performer of the Week honors.

“I’m really excited about what we can do this season,” said Crandall. “I think we will surprise some people.”
MC softball caught fire on the trip, scoring 67 runs and winning seven of nine games.

After spending two years away from the game, senior Courtney Bennett returned to bat .550 with 10 RBI. Overall head coach John Goddard was pleased with what his players learned.

“All contributed and stood out at some point during the trip,” said Goddard. “It was truly a team effort and experience.”

MC baseball is scheduled to take the field at 6 p.m. Saturday against Aurora University, while softball hosts Eureka for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
