Scots stung by Lady Bees, look toward next year
April 19, 2013
In Davenport, Iowa, Monmouth College women’s tennis saw their season come to a close on Monday with a loss at the hands of the Lady Bees of St. Ambrose. The first singles match of the day featured Heather Matejka of St. Ambrose defeating Kristen Huffman of Monmouth 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Julianna Graf then fell to Olivia Lofgren of the Lady Bees 6-3, 6-0. Joi Henry, Jessica Witherell and Amanda Buck each dropped their respective singles matches as well, only winning a total of nine games combined. Monmouth recovered a bit in doubles play, sweeping the pair of matches in which they took part. The junior duo of Huffman and Henry handled St. Ambrose’s Emily Turner and Mallory Sisson 8-4.
In the other doubles match of the afternoon, Graf and Witherell defeated Tasha Olson and Alyssa Dloouhy of St. Ambrose in commanding fashion, 8-3. “We played a tough match,” said Graf. “Jessica Witherell and I played our best net game, which helped us pull the W.”
Since only five Scots made the trip across the Mississippi River, the afternoon’s final doubles contest went to the Lady Bees by forfeit as MC couldn’t field a full third doubles squad. Despite a tough 2012-13 campaign, spirits remain high amongst the players.
“I’m very excited for next tennis season,” Graf said. “We have seen several promising recruits who would definitely strengthen our varsity lineup.”
The Scots lose one senior in Kortney Rupp, but the remainder of the roster will return next season as the program continues the rebuilding process.
