One is the Loneliest Number

September 8, 2013

In a heartbreaking 2013 opener, the Scots came up short by the slimmest of margins, 22-23 to lose their 10th straight to Coe College. After allowing short gains on the ground and in the air in the first half the Scots fell to 17-7. Quarterback senior, Brik Wedekind couldn’t find any rhythm on his first two drives that both ended in 3 and outs. The next drive resulted in the lone first half score, a 49 yard bomb to C.J. Shields. Trey Yocum couldn’t find any room to breathe as he was held to 15 yards on 7 carries in the first half. The Kohawks suffered costly penalties like a quarterback keeper that would’ve got them to the 3 yard line except for a holding call.

Early in the 2nd half Trey Yocum woke up in a big way on a 15 yard run. On a 4th and 2, a deflected pass gets picked up by freshmen Cole Krynicki and it’s carried to the 1 yard line. Wedekind pushes it in himself to make it 17-13 followed by Ace Henricks’ blocked extra point attempt. Coe found the mean side of Ben Ketchum who came up with third down stops on consecutive trips to the red zone. Both led to field goals that pushed Coe’s lead to 23-13. Yocum broke tackles running for 20 and 15 yards, putting Henricks in place for another 3 point score. Yocum nearly had his 16th career 100 yard rushing game, he ran for 96 yards averaging 4.2 yard per carry with a rushing touchdown.

Wedekind found Shields again for 25 yards before the Scots’ found themselves 4th and 2. They go for it and Yocum rolls through the line to get 15 yards and walks in the additional 2 yards to score. Monmouth only trails by an extra point with but Henricks, who once made 38 consecutive comes up short so the Scots’ still are behind 22-23. Monmouth gets one more chance with a late drive but Wedekind gets picked off at the line of scrimmage to put a cap on the season opener. Wedekind ends the day with 267 yards 1 touchdown with an interception. Monmouth football returns to the April Zorn Memorial next week to host conference rival Beloit College, start time 1pm.
