Four times running

November 8, 2013

Kyra Kimber and Alyssa Edwards cut through the crispy November air at the Cross Country Midwestern Conference Championships in Grinnell to claim all-conference honors. “The conditions on Saturday were perfect, in my opinion,” said Edwards. “I don’t really mind racing in the cold because I certainly prefer the cold over racing in the blazing heat.” Producing heat hasn’t been a problem for the duo as they were the Scots’ one-two placements in all races this year.

Edwards was all-conference for the fourth time in her collegiate career, adding her name to a short-list of runners who have accomplished the same feat at Monmouth. The list consists of Rachel Bowden, Mary Kate Beter and Katie Staab, all of whom ran at Monmouth during Edwards’ tenure, giving her a special connection to the accomplishment. “It was a fantastic thing to have finally achieved for me because all of the girls who are in this group are fantastic and achieved runners who I have befriended and had so much fun with at different points in my four years here.” She says her teammates have always been a key to her success, as well as her internal motivation. “I have always had a passion for racing and also a drive to be as successful as I can in my running career, so that has pushed me all these years.”

Kimber put up the biggest race of an already impressive season. At Grinnell she ran a personal best time 23:05.08, shaving over a minute off her 6k performance at last year’s conference meet. Edged out of all-conference honors last year by a mere three seconds, she would not be denied in 2013, finishing fourth place amongst all runners in the conference.

Kimber and Edwards come out of a program that has enjoyed recent success and seeks to continue. Women’s cross country have not placed seventh or worse in the conference since 2005, this is also the seventh year in a row the team has had multiple all-conference awardees. As for the future, this is a very young running corp. Outside of Edwards and Kimber all the runners are lower classmen, including five freshmen.

But they’ll all get tread taken off their shoes soon, as track season is around the corner. Edwards is ready, “My fellow seniors and I have had a blast with our fourth season and we cannot wait for track season to begin so we may continue the fun.”
