Grinnell out guns Scots in thriller

January 31, 2014

Next on the docket for men’s basketball was a date with the nation’s leader in scoring and conference tournament hopeful Grinnell College. Monmouth fell just short to visiting Grinnell in a game that seemed to be played in fast forward. The Scots dominated the Pioneers 74-18 in the paint but weren’t able to overcome Grinnell’s 23 3-pointers on 56 percent shooting.

Monmouth tallied 31 assists as a team, which sits tied for the 3rd best performance in school history.

Monmouth overcame a nine-point first-half deficit and took a one point lead on a lay-up by Spencer Thomas with 13 minutes and 45 seconds remaining. The two teams traded buckets for the next three minutes until the Pioneers took their final lead of the game at 89-88 with nine minutes and 21 seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers hit nine of 11 shots from the free-throw line down the stretch to salt the game away.

Cole Jackson went for 28 points and Andrew Mathison tallied a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Scots. Thomas had 14 points off the bench while Nick Marema and Matt Juhola poured in 13 points apiece.
Monmouth travels to Lawrence University this Saturday before returning to take on Illinois College at Glennie Gymnasium on Feb. 5th.
