No luck against the Bucs

January 31, 2014

The Monmouth College men’s basketball team took a road trip to Beloit College and is in desperate need of a conference win to get back in the Midwest Conference tournament hunt. The Fighting Scots defeated the Buccaneers earlier in the season that saw the home team come out on top 82-79.

The Scots weren’t as fortunate in the latter half of the series as they traveled to Wisconsin on Saturday to best their rival a second time. Beloit shot 57 percent in the opening 20 minutes to take a 36-28 halftime lead despite 13 points from sophomore forward Andrew Mathison.

Ben Friday scored 11 off the bench in the second half including a bucket that capped a 10-2 run to cut the Buc’s lead to 42-40 with 13 minutes and 22 seconds left in the game.

The Scots were unable to capitalize on that momentum partially due to foul trouble and partially due to 20 second-half points from Honorable Mention All-American James Lazarcik of Beloit.

Mathison led the way with 19 points while Friday and Cole Jackson joined Mathison in double digits for the Scots. Friday posted 14 points and 12 rebounds and points per game leader Jackson added 12 points.
