Tennis eyeing title

January 31, 2014

The Monmouth College men’s tennis team has high hopes for this upcoming season. This year there is one mindset into the season and one goal. The main objective voiced by players and coaches is to win a conference title for the first time since 1938. The MC men will lean on their seniors to fulfill their goal. The Fighting Scots want to build on last year’s success and continue to compete for the conference title.

Last year, the Fighting Scots led by Head Coach Chad Braun, fell short in the conference tournament and competed with the conference winner Grinnell College. The team finished 3rd in conference last year and only sees themselves going up to the top. Although the Scots failed to win conference, they seemed to build confidence for this upcoming season with the veterans that are returning. Assistant Coach, Brian Jordan, stressed the importance of this year’s senior class. “We remember the lost last year and our focus is to use our experience and hard work so we won’t fall short again,” said Jordan. “I think returning the now seniors and other guys from last year will help us get where we want and need to be.”

The team is returning four of the six juniors, now seniors, from last year, including the same men who have been the top three seeds since their freshman year. Seniors Chris Franco, David Johnson, David Stewart and Alex King will lead the charge for the Scots. The team thinks they have what it takes to get over the hump.

King excitingly spoke on the upcoming season. “We didn’t perform as well as we could have last year, but we only have aspirations to win conference. We have the experience and we will continue to work hard every day in practice to prepare ourselves to win matches and defeat opponents in our conference,” said King.

MC’s men’s tennis team has only one thing else to do about their anticipations. They have to go out and perform to make sure they secure their hopes of the season and bring home a conference title.
