Golf teeing off

March 28, 2014

Monmouth College men’s golf team has finished as runner-ups in the last three years at the Midwest Conference (MWC) tournament but this year their eyes are fixed down the fairway to return to the top of the podium. Coach Dave Ragone has heaped praise, in particular, on his senior class, “I really feel like we’re in better shape as a team at this point of the season than we were last year,” said Ragone. “A lot of that is due to the fact that our seniors are hungry and chomping at the bit to win a conference championship. The entire senior class has done a great job of leadership and nurturing the underclassmen with their work ethic and mental toughness.”

Myrtle Beach, S.C. was the sight of the spring’s first action, over the break. In fact, it was the first time the Scots have been able to get on a course this season, cooped up in the Huff center due to persistent winter weather. For their troubles, the Scots earned a third place at the tournament and have set off towards a promising season.

This weekend the Scots take on rival Knox College, originally set at Knox’s home course, Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, but due to unfavorable course conditions the showdown will take place at Gibson Woods. Competition will take place Friday and Saturday, tee times scheduled for noon Friday and Saturday’s final round at 9 a.m.
