Poetry reading Wednesday
April 11, 2014
April is Poetry Month and that brings the Annual Monmouth College Faculty/Staff Poetry Reading. On Wed April 16 at 4 p.m. in the Morgan Room of Poling Hall a group of approximately 20 faculty members and others will read short, favorite poems.
Among the readings will be English Professor Craig Watson. He will read Wallace Steven’s “A Postcard from a Volcano.” The poem has a special significance to Watson. “My teacher and mentor in an M.F.A. program at San Francisco State University, William Dickey, recited the poem to me in response to a question I asked him in conference one day,” said Watson via email. “We had been talking about Keats’ letters: ‘the holiness of the heart’s affections and the truth of the imagination.’ I asked him to cite a poem he would recommend that highly.”
This year’s reading will feature students reading original poetry soon to be published in this year’s Coil, the college’s literary and arts magazine.
The program is free and open to all members of the college and community.
