Soccer looking ahead to MWC games on road

October 3, 2014

Monmouth College renewed their biggest rivalry last Saturday after a strong defensive effort against conference rivals Cornell College last week. The Scots were looking to get off to hot start in conference, but unfortunately Knox had other plans as they bested Monmouth to the tune of 4-1.

“The entire team was very disappointed in the loss,” said Junior Max Daniels.

“No one on the team said a word on the trip back to Monmouth. We plan on getting back on our feet after that tough game by really focusing on everything we do during practice. We plan on focusing on high amounts of communication a long with playing to a certain standard,” Daniels said.

The Prairie Fire outshot the Scots 21-9 and kept Monmouth off the board in the first half of the game. Junior Nathaniel Logie of Knox College put the Prairie Fire on the board in 34th minute of the game and was followed ten minutes later by freshman teammate Phelipe Graske.

Knox was able to put one more goal on the board in second half before freshman Jake Cogan was able to put Monmouth on the board in the 79th minute.

The Scots’ momentum from the goal was thwarted, however, as Sophomore Bernardo Gasperazzo scored an insurance goal for Knox seven minutes after Cogan. The Scots will look to bounce back after a tough loss.

We are always trying to play at a higher level,” said Junior Josh Sutherland.

“Moving up from high school soccer to college soccer is a big step. All of our freshmen have their own specific qualities that make them great players. Freshmen that have stepped up into starting positions and made a big impact include Justin ‘Crazy Legs’ Seeley, Adam ‘McNasty’ Stenzel, Jake ‘the Snake’ Cogan and Luke ‘DJ RooRoo’ Vandenberg,” Sutherland said.

The Scots are in for a busy weekend as they will hit the road and head to Wisconsin. Their first stop is De Pere to face off against St. Norbert College this Saturday at 11 a.m. They will also see opponent Ripon College in Ripon on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both are Midwest Conference games.
