A slice of culture

April 17, 2015

Friday April 24, students are invited to try a slice of French culture. The French club is hosting a wine and cheese soiree. The party will take place in the Underground at 6 p.m. Wine will be nonalcoholic, so all students are welcome to attend. Tickets are $3, and will be sold in Stockdale during meals next week. The price covers admission, refreshments and entry into a raffle.

“Food is a marvelous way to connect to the French culture and experience a new way of interaction,” says French Club ASMC representative, Bota Yergalieyeva, about the upcoming event.

In addition to the social aspect of the event, it will also be mildly educational. Professor Craig Vivian, from the education department, who also teaches INTR-388, Wine and World, will speak at the soiree. With this event, the French Club hopes to expose attendees to French culture and teach about wine tasting, which is one aspect of that culture.

This is not the first wine and cheese soiree that the club has hosted. Two years ago, they had another similar event that, according to French club president Michelle Diedrich, was a lot of fun.

When asked about how French Club has affected her, Diedrich commented, “French Club has helped me bridge what I learn in the French classroom to real life situations.” Both wine and cheese are a part of French culture, but neither attendees of the soiree, nor members of the club are expected to have any knowledge of French language or culture. Their goal is to educate, and everyone is welcome.

“I have met inspiring individuals through the French club. They showed me that one doesn’t have to speak the language or know the French culture to be an active and creative member of the club,” Yergaliyeva commented.

In addition to the Wine and Cheese Soiree and other cultural and social events, the French Club also has a focus on philanthropy within the community. Earlier this year, they dorm stormed around campus to raise money to help cover the cost of books in French for area schools to aid students that speak French or wish to learn.

The French club meets every other Monday at 5 p.m. in McMike Academic, room 303, and welcomes new members. For more information about French Club of the Wine and Cheese Soiree, contact Michelle Diedrich.
