Mellinger foundation offers new business scholarship

April 17, 2015

Tom Johnston is an unfamiliar name to current MC students, but Johnston had a hand in millions of dollars-worth of scholarships started in the 1980s. Beginning this year on Scholar’s Day, hearing his name will mean a $10,000 scholarship for one hard-working junior business major.

The Edward Arthur Mellinger Educational Foundation has established an annual scholarship at Monmouth College in honor of Johnston, its former foundation chair.

Former Monmouth English professor Gary Willhardt and current assistant women’s basketball coach Gary Martin came up with the idea after Martin’s daughter received a similar scholarship at Grinnell College.

“(Willhardt and Martin) want to honor their former chairmen with someone who exemplifies those values: work hard, overcome obstacles, pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” said Michael Connell, political economy and commerce department chair.

The scholarship will become annual and always be awarded to one junior student on top of any financial aid they already receive.

“We are a college of high opportunity,” Connell said. “Our message to students has always been that if you are willing to work hard, we are here to help you succeed. We want to reward hard work.”

The application deadline window is relatively small: the deadline to apply is April 23, in order to give departmental faculty time to review and announce the recipient on April 28, Scholar’s Day.
