Men’s Golf hone their skills at invitational

September 18, 2015

Monmouth College men’s golf this weekend teed off at the Cropper Golf Classic at Hunters Golf Course in Marion, Iowa. The Fighting Scots finished in ninth place with a score of 642 at the Cropper Golf Classic.

Senior Drake Decker posted a score of 76 to finish as the top performer for the Fighting Scots. Decker ended up with a final score in total of 155 after shooting a 76 in the final day of play at the Cropper Golf Classic. Decker finished tied for 20th in the inivitational.

“The team’s work ethic has improved,” said Junior Dalton Anderson. “The upperclassmen remember how it felt to come up short at conference last year, and I think we’ve done a good job of emphasizing those emotions to the freshman so they are just as motivated as us”

Anderson shot an 85 on the first day of the invitational, the shot an 82 to give him a two day tally of 167 and was 23 shots over par. Anderson finished tied for 52nd place.

Senior Evan Bean on his first day on the course had some trouble as he shot a score of 86. However, this didn’t discourage Bean as he was able to cut off seven strokes of his final score for a total of 79 on the final day of play.

“After the first day, I was disappointed with how I played,” said Bean. “But I was able to take some positives, I had a better idea of the course and how I wanted to approach each hole the second day and try to put myself in a position where my score would count and be helpful to the team.

“I just tried to focus on one hole at a time and I felt like I handled the holes better on the second time through.”

The Fighting Scots Men’s Golf team will only have two meets remaining in their fall season. They will play next Sunday at the MacMurray Fall Invitational.

“We’ve really been hitting the courses hard in practice,” said Sophomore Luke Long. “The team has been working so hard so that we can continue to get better. We have a lot of talent that returned from last year and a bunch of new guys that can contribute right away. With the leadership we have on this team, we have to potential to make some noise this year.”
