Unsung Hero

A familiar smiling face around campus comes from former student, now staff member, Jake McClean. He recently graduated from Monmouth College in the spring of 2015. McClean just started his position at Monmouth College as Professional Development Advisor and Hall Director for the Wackerlee Career and Leadership Center.

While attending Monmouth College, he majored in Communication Studies and minored in Spanish. He actually changed his major about nine times before he decided to stick with communication because of the faculty and his love for communication theory about relationships. Before accepting the position with the Wakerlee Career and Leadership Center, McClean got a job at Modern Woodmen of America and got licensed to sell life and health insurance. When the position at Wakerlee opened up McClean was offered and he gladly chose to come back to Monmouth College. “Monmouth has been my home in much more than just my academics. It’s where I grew into my own kind of person,” he said.

McClean’s new position allows him to work hand in hand with Stephanie Kinkaid, the Assistant Director Wackerle Career and Leadership Program. While Kinkaid focuses on Graduate School programs, McClean tackles career development, internships, resumes, and job searches. His favorite part of his job is seeing the progress in students with their resumes. “Started from the bottom now we’re here,” he said. He also enjoys the “life chats” with the students who come in to figure out what their next step in life is.

He considers himself a “lifer” here at Monmouth College and will be here as long as the college will have him. McClean plans on getting his Masters to help with student development and strengthen his skills for the students. He advises students to come to the Career Center sooner to help develop a plan for their future.
