David Wright – On the move

October 30, 2015

The Coil, Monmouth College’s annual literary and arts magazine, which features student submissions, will have a new faculty advisor. David Wright, an assistant professor of English at Monmouth since 2013, will take over from Professor Joe Angotti, who advised the publication for the past five years.

Angotti, a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Communication since 2005 oversaw last year’s 20th anniversary edition of The Coil. For that issue, Angotti and last year’s student editors turned to Wright and his students in an advanced creative writing class for help in compiling selections from the previous two decades of the magazine, pieces they wove into the issue with work from current student writers.

Angotti believes that the Coil remains in capable hands. “David has played a major role in assisting student editors and me with publishing past editions of Coil. I can’t think of anyone who is more deserving or qualified to take this job,” said Angotti.

“It was a great education in the tradition and history of student writing and art at Monmouth College,” says Wright. “We really got a feel not only for the kind of work that student writers and artists have been up to over the years but also for how the campus culture has shifted and grown over time. I’m grateful for Joe’s invitation to have students take on that task. And I’m excited now to take on advising The Coil for the future.”

Once a staff is gathered, the magazine will post calls for students to submit visual art, poems, short stories and creative non-fiction. Any student interested in serving on the magazine’s editorial staff is encouraged to contact Wright.
