November 6, 2015

The Monmouth College swim teams opened up their season at the Illinois Wesleyan Halloween Invitational. Both teams ended the meet with a runner-up finish and they also got a pair of individual victories.

On the women’s side, Allie Vallance took first place in the diving with a score of 231.60 while Breanna Hoepfner added another first place in the 200-yard butterfly. She swam a 2:36.96 to win by less than a half-second. Claire Woodrow and Cassidy O’Connell both added runner-up finishes in their swims. Woodrow swam a 1:00.59 in the free to place second, while freshmen Sarah Wright took third in 1:04.80. O’Connell got second in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:38.12

On the men’s side, junior Cristian Corbett came out of the meet with two second place finishes. R.L. Aldridge came in right behind Corbett in the 200 free, clocking a time of 2:05.09. Corbett also got second in the 500 free with a time of 5:33.24.

“We were short a lot of our teammates because of Water Polo,” said Corbett. “So we had to make up for it by swimming events that we were not used to. The meet was supposed to be a fun meet. We did some events that we have not done before.

“As for myself, I’m not quite where I want to be but that may have been because of the nature of the meet. We’re only one meet into the season it’s almost too early in the season to even determine how the rest of the season will be.:

Andrew Domkuski and Tom Cangelosi added another 2-3 finish in the 200 breaststroke while junior Ian Salveson and Aldridge came in just 12 one-hundredths of a second apart for the Scots’ third 2-3 finish of the meet.

The men also had a couple runner-up finishes in the relays. Corbett, Domkuski, Hoepfner and Raheem Brown placed second in the 200 medley relay, just three seconds off the winning pace. Aldridge, Brown, Hoepfner and Salveson teamed up for a second place time of 1:34.32.

“A handful of school records were either set or broken,” said Cangelosi. “Moving forward, the men’s team is looking forward to the return of some strong swimmers who are currently finishing up their water polo season.”

The Scots will have their home opening meet on November 14. The Monmouth College Invitational will feature both the men’s and women’s teams facing off against
