Rough weather, good results

April 15, 2016

Anthony Matozzi / The Courier - Senior Drake Decker hits the ball closer to the hole.

A strong second day at the Augustana Invitational Tournament helped the Scots varsity squad improve to a 14th place finish over the weekend.

The varsity team fired a 334 on the first day at Pinnacle Country Club and a 323 the second day at Fyre Lake, while the JV team was behind the pace with a 374 and a 378.

Playing conditions were tough as the wind blew hard all weekend and there was even a sign of sleet that rained down the first day. The second day featured on and off wind that often altered trajectory of some athlete’s shots.

Drake Decker led the charge as the reigning conference champ fired an 85 on Friday and rallied on Saturday with a 75. Decker finished tied for 37th place overall.

Senior Evan Bean and freshman Nate Monroe both finished with a 2-day total of 168 ending in a tie for the 84th spot.

“This weekend I put up one solid round and struggled in the other one. I’ve been working on becoming more consistent as the season goes on and I feel that my game is finally starting to come together,” said junior Luke Krieter, who was the low score for the Scots on the windy Friday. “I’m hoping I can hit my peak and stride in two weeks at the conference tournament and we can qualify for the national championship once again.”

Krieter and Nate Jacobs finished out the scoring for the Scots as they both tied for 95th.

Sophomore Logan Moothart, whose Saturday round totaled 12 strokes less than Friday’s, led the JV team. He tallied a 94-82 for both days and ended in a tie for 115th.

Anderson went 96-84 for the weekend, putting together a respectable second day for the JV squad. A 97-87 two-day total put Jordan Junker in sole possession of 126th as he also improved a lot on his second day play.

Liam Merritt and Mason Ely concluded the JV scoring for the weekend with a 186 and 190 respectfully.

The Scots will hit the road to Springfield, Illinois on Friday and Saturday for the Illinois College Blueboy Invitational. Sunday, the team will travel to Rockford, IL to Aldeen Golf Course where the conference tournament will be held.
