Volleyball hosts three team tournament

September 9, 2016

The women’s volleyball team started off their season hosting the Monmouth Invite. Along with the Fighting Scots the three team tournament included Principia College and Lincoln Christian.

The first match of the day was between Lincoln Christian and Monmouth College. The Scots kept it close the first set but fell short 25-17. With Lincoln Christian up 1-0 the Scots had to grind out the second set to avoid a 2-0 hole. The Scots prevailed, winning the second set 25-17. The third set could have went either way but Lincoln Christian squeaked out the win 25-22 and took a 2-1 advantage. The fourth set was also a close one but the Scots fell short again 25-21 which ended the match 3-1. Ashley Farris lead Monmouth in kills with 8 while freshman Laura Dulee had 18 assists.

After Principia College defeated Lincoln Christian 3-1 the Scots were ready to face off against Principia at 2 PM. Monmouth fought hard in the first set but barely missed taking an early lead. Principia took the first set 26-24. The second set was the worst set of the tournament for the Fighting Scots as they fell to the Panthers 25-13 and would have to try to dig themselves out of a 2-0 hole. They made the third set close but Principia won the set 25-21 and ended the game after three sets. Laura Dulee once again lead the Scots in assists with 15 while fellow freshman Anissa Jackson had a team leading 13 digs. Laura Dulee and Becca Dabrowski were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Freshman Laura Dulee said she was “very pleased with how our first weekend went. The returners have done a great job supporting us freshmen and pushing us to do our best each practice.” This young team has a great amount of talent and you can expect a lot of success in the near future.

Volleyball plays at home against MacMurray College on September 7th before heading to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday.
