Bright Future for Cross Country
September 9, 2016
The team has a very optimistic mentality coming into this upcoming cross country season. Behind young Coach Welty, the team is looking to have a bright future. Budding stars are emerging along with a solid list of freshman recruits that ensure that a solid season this year will not be a flash in the pan. Much was learned about the teams potential after their shorter than the college cross country norm race of a 5k for the men and a 3K for the women. For seasoned veterans like Cooper Pauley and Tate Heiple, whipping through a 3 mile race has a much different feel from the 6+ mile races they participated in last track season.
With added speed for the returning runners from last season, this squad looks to have some speed going down that final stretch at the end of a race. There is nothing but positive vibrations from everyone including the males, females and strong coaching staff.
The anticipation is high for this next season. The team would appreciate a larger Monmouth fan section to support them in their efforts. It is always beneficial having familiar faces to cheer you on during a race. The popularity of XC has emerged in recent years, which gives the program hope for a larger recruitment class.
This year, Monmouth had a large class of incoming freshman males which has played into the strengthening of the XC team. Behind the veterans the sky is the limit. Another large benefit to this team is not a large graduating class to leave at the end of the season. With all the factors playing in, both squads are looking forward to a great year.
