Tennis Continues conference play
September 23, 2016
Women’s tennis headed to Iowa this past Saturday for a 9 A.M. match at Cornell College and then headed over to Grinnell, Iowa for a 3 P.M. match.
Monmouth and Cornell had a lot of close singles matches. Katherine Hinman came close to defeating Cornell’s Julia Thorne but fell in two straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Morgan Holle got the only singles win for the Scots when she took down Abbey Nelson in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Katherine Hinman and Rachel Leifheit paired up for a doubles match and barely missed coming away with a win as they fell short 8-5. The Scots lost the other two doubles matches 8-1 and 8-0. Cornell defeated Monmouth 8-1 to improve to 6-1.
Monmouth drove over to Grinnell after the Cornell match to take on the Pioneers. The Scots couldn’t get any momentum going as they fell in straight sets of all their singles matches. It was the same story in the doubles matches as Monmouth lost 8-0 in all three of the matches. Monmouth lost to Grinnell 9-0 as the Pioneers raised their conference record to 4-0.
“Both teams are really good and I know that we are focused on the process not the result,” said junior Katherine Hinman. “Our work ethic and motivation as a team is great and we push each other to be the best that we can be. We are going to continue to improve and make our tennis program stronger.”
