Women’s golf finishes third at home invitational
September 23, 2016
Gibson Woods Golf Course became home to a nine-team field this past Saturday as the Monmouth Women’s Golf team hosted the Fighting Scots Invitational. Competing against three conference team rivals, the Scots put forth a third place effort, behind Central and MWC team, Illinois College.
Senior Annie Sandrock edged out Senior Tanner Garey on day two to lead the way for the home team. Freshman Haley Hoekstra, returning from a wrist injury, rounded out the top three for Monmouth in her first collegiate tournament.
More than halfway through the season, the Scots just have two more weekends before the Midwest Conference Championships in Rockford. To prepare for the big tournament, Senior Tanner Garey says “We’ve just been taking it day by day. We really focus on basic golf principles, getting in our swings, playing each hole, and making it all count.” Garey also adds that the eight woman team has known all along that the season is short, therefore, has realized “that every tournament counts. We cannot get sidetracked. We have to work hard and put forth our best efforts every weekend.”
As the short season dwindles down, the goal for Conference has still remained. “Obviously the goal is to win, but most importantly, the goal is to do the best we can. Believe in ourselves and if we can accomplish that, we will come out winners no matter the score,” adds Garey. With the biggest incoming class the golf program has seen, the four collegiate newbies have brought much excitement and interest to the program. “As they continue to grow as players, they will continue to contribute to the growth of the Women’s Golf program.”
