Scots 5-0 after Homecoming win
October 7, 2016
Monmouth moved to 5-0 this past Saturday when they took on the Cornell Rams for their Homecoming game.
Not only did they stay undefeated but they also had a school-record 710 total yards. The combination of Tanner Matlick throwing for 384 yards and three touchdowns and the Scots having 306 rushing yards helped them take down the Cornell Rams 57-14.
The Scots wasted no time getting on the board as Matlick ran in a two yard touchdown on their first possession. Three minutes later running back DeAndre Wright broke loose for a 41 yard touchdown run. Wright finished the game with 125 yards rushing on just eleven carries.
Trent Rains also got in on the action with a three yard touchdown run that gave Monmouth a 21 point lead. They got the ball back with less than twenty seconds left in the first quarter and one play is all they needed. Matlick connected with Brock Thoms for a 63 yard touchdown pass with just five seconds left in the first quarter.
Cornell would get their first score in the second quarter but Monmouth would go into the locker room up 34-7.
Kicker Joey Biel would break into Monmouth’s record book in the second half. He tied the Scots’ single game record for made field goals in a game with three. After making six PATs and three field goals he set the program record for total kicking points with 15.
The Fighting Scots would score three touchdowns in the second half, including a 44 yard touchdown run from Austin Ray.
Monmouth’s defense absolutely shut down the Rams on Saturday. They gave up only 94 yards rushing and held the Rams to 14 points. The defense was lead by senior’s Matt Barnes and Michael Smith who had 10 tackles each.
Monmouth has a bye week this week but they will be back in action on Oct. 15. They will take on conference foe Grinnell at home.
