October 28, 2016
The women’s volleyball team had a weekend full of exciting sets, starting on Friday 21 against conference rivals St. Norbert.
The Scots put up an extremely good effort against the Knights, but fell short in three straights sets. The women lost by a combined 9 points over the course of the three sets. In the first set the two teams were battling back and forth the entire set, and the Scots had the biggest lead in the first game when they were up 10-6 early on in the set. Towards the end of the set the Scots fell down 17-20 but were able to crawl back before St. Norbert took the first set 25-23. In the 2nd set the Scots got off to a rough start losing the 6 first points and eventually getting down 12-2. The women kept it close though and the set ended with a score of 25-20. In the third set with their backs against the wall the Scots got off to a hot start up early 9-5 on the Knights. St. Norbert would fight back tying it up at 13 points a piece. The Scots fought hard and were up 23-22 but ended up losing a third straight set 25-23.
The Scots were back at it again Saturday afternoon against Lake Forest where they won a wild 5 set match against the Foresters. The Scots won the first set 25-11 scoring 6 straight points in the middle of the set to go up 13-6 giving Lake Forest no chance to win. In the 2nd set the Scots got off to another quick start, going up 5-0, but the Foresters would fight back and end up winning the 2nd set 25-21. A wild 3rd set ended with Lake Forest winning 26-24 with both teams battling back and forth as the Scots go down 2 sets to 1.
The Scots knew they needed to spark a fire in the fourth set to stay alive and they did exactly that getting out to an 18-14 lead and eventually would take the win by a score of 25-22 forcing a 5th set. When the 5th set started there was a lot of energy in the gym and the Scots took that and got off to an early 6-1 lead. The Scots would need that lead, as they would later be down 8-9. The women were not going to lose the 5th set played to only fifteen and fought back to win a thrilling five set match 15-12.
The Fighting Scots have two contests this week, first on Wednesday 26, as they host Knox College on senior night. They play again on Saturday traveling to Grinnell College for their final match of the season.
