Women’s basketball traveled to Decatur, Illinois on Tuesday to take on MIllikin University in their season opener. Junior Maddie Dohleman finished with a double-double but the Scots couldn’t overcome MIllikin’s hot three-point shooting in the 82-60 loss/
Neither team could get going early. Six and a half minutes into the game the score was 8-6 Millikin. The Big Blue used a 12-4 run to take a ten point lead at the end of the first quarter.
Millikin would build on that lead and would be up 27-12 just two minutes into the second quarter. Thanks to good free throw shooting and strong defense the Scots cut the lead to six with four minutes left in the half. After a five minute scoring drought MIllikin would score eight points in the final three minutes of the quarter, but not before the Scots cut into their lead significantly. Millikin lead 35-27 going into halftime.
A layup by Maddie Dohleman early in the third quarter would cut the Millikin lead to three. The teams went back and forth, neither letting up on the intensity. Monmouth couldn’t slow down the Big Blues strong shooting as Millikin slowly built their lead in the last half of the quarter. Millikin took a 17 point lead into the fourth quarter.
The teams played very even in the final q uarter. Millikin would hit a shot to increase their lead but Monmouth would come right back and hit a shot. Despite the even play in the fourth Monmouth couldn’t pull any closer to the Big Blue and would take the loss 82-60. The Scots played great in the second and fourth quarters, but Millikin hit on 47% of their shots including 54% on three-pointers. Maddie Dohleman lead the team with 21 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Rebecca Gallis added 11 points.
