Men’s basketball takes on St. Norbert
February 10, 2017
The Fighting Scots had a tough loss over the weekend, losing 91-62 against Midwest Conference leaders St. Norbert. Norbert coming into the contest with a 15-3 overall record and Monmouth at just 6-12, the Scots knew they had a tall task ahead of them.
The Knights would get off to a quick six to nothing lead before Will Jones would knock down a three point basket with just under eighteen minutes left in the first half. The Scots would then go cold as St. Norbert went on a 25-0 run over the next eight minutes of the ball game. Lamont Mitchell would stop the bleeding with ten minutes to go in the half by knocking down a two-point jumper. Little too late though for the Scots as this start to the game would put them back 26 points to a really tough Norbert team. Monmouth would get a little offense going and kept the Norbert lead from growing. The Scots would head into halftime down 46-20.
There was one bright spot in the Scots day, as junior Will Jones would reach a special benchmark in his career at Monmouth College. Saturday Jones reached his 1,000th point in his career playing at Monmouth College. With still another year of playing he will look to add onto that point total. On Saturday Jones did lead all scores for the Scots with 16 points and Norbert’s Bobinski would lead all scorers with 22 points.
In the second half the Scots fought hard, trading baskets with Norbert, not allowing the deficit for them to increase much more. At one point Monmouth was able to narrow the lead to just 23 points but the conference leaders were too much to handle. The Knights would go on to win by 29 points with a score of 91-62.
The Fighting Scots will have an away matchup against Lawrence University this Saturday.
