Meet the Courier Staff

April 28, 2017

Gianna Miceli, senior, is the Features Editor for The Courier. The duties of the Features Editor include deciding topics for the features section and finding writers. Additionally, the features editor works on the layout of the features section.
Gianna is from West Chicago, Illinois. “It is not the west side of Chicago,” Miceli explains, “It is a suburb west of the city, near Naperville.”

She heard about Monmouth College through her travel volleyball coach who played here. Miceli reflected saying, “Senior year of high school, I got offered to play on the volleyball team here. I came to visit and fell in love with the campus.” Even though she did not stick with volleyball throughout her time here, she got involved elsewhere and is still happy with her decision.

Gianna is a senior double majoring in Communication and Public Relations. She was hired for the newspaper because of Kallie DiTusa. “We are in the same sorority and she had seen some of my work for a Layout & Design class with Chris Goble,” Miceli explained. “She had then referred me to Professor Angotti, who I had a class with before and had seemed to be impressed with my writing.”

During her time on the staff this year, Gianna had nothing but good things to say about her experience. “My favorite memory of newspaper would be any Thursday in the newsroom. It has always been a great time joking around with everyone. I couldn’t have survived this year without my news fam. Each one of them has helped me grow and become the person I am in such a short period of time. Also, working with Professor Angotti has challenged me and really pushed me to think outside the box.”

Her advice for the future features editor would be to have fun with the job. She explained that not everything has to be serious. Get creative with story ideas. Have fun in the newsroom because that is when you are making memories and bonds that will last a lifetime.

Outside of The Courier she is involved in Pi Beta Phi, Mortar Board, and Order of Omega. She also is working at have an internship at Warren Achievement Center, a non-profit organization in Monmouth, and she is a speech assistant and academic coach.

As of right now, her plans after graduation involve a lot of traveling. “I really would like to find a job in Chicago and hopefully move into the city. My dream job would involve working for a publishing and editing company or a non-profit.”

In her free time she enjoys reading and writing, playing volleyball for fun, and being outside. Shopping is one of her hobbies along with a passion for makeup.
