Cross Country strides towards goals

September 8, 2017

Both the Men and Women’s Cross Country teams opened their season this past Friday with some outstanding performances.

In the Women’s 2 Mile race, Joanna Podosek took 1st leading the Scots and posting a time of 12:17. Backing up Podosek, Stephanie Saey crossed the wire and placed 11th with a time of 12:44. After Podosek and Saey, the rest of the women’s team held strong with two three-person packs. The first pack was led by Kate Saulcy (13:07) who was followed by Julia Sterr (13:11) and Kelci Foss (13:20). The second pack followed closely behind and was led by Teagan McKenna (13:34) who was supported by Natalia Bobak (13:47) and Jessica Salinas (14:34).

In the Men’s 5k race, Cooper Pauley led the Scots placing 3rd overall with a time of 16:08. Behind Pauley, Tate Heiple placed 14th clocking in a time of 16:51. After Heiple, the Scots had a two-person pack that was led by Tyler Bland (17:40) who then was followed by Griffin Morrill (17:47). Running strong, Mike Bersell (18:26), Tanner Heiple (19:03), and Hunter Todd (21:19) ran in finishing off for the Scots.

The Scots have high but obtainable goals for this season. With the men placing 2nd and the women placing 4th at the Midwest Conference Championship last fall, both teams know what it takes to be successful.

“It’s the first meet of the season so you can’t get too high or low about it,” said Junior Tate Heiple. “We have our starting point now and we just have to keep improving until the conference meet.”

The Fighting Scots Cross-Country Team will continue their season this Saturday in Grinnell, Iowa for the notorious annual Les Duke Invitational.
