Golf teams off to strong starts

The Fighting Scots started off their fall season at Lake Bracken golf course in Galesburg last Thursday. The men had some solid scores from a couple returning senior golfers this year. Senior Logan Moothart and senior Nate Hopper both posted scores of 78, both placing them in the top-10 for individual finishers. These scores would place the Scots in 6th place out of 12 teams. The men also received a great round from junior Nate Monroe who shot an 80, just a couple strokes behind the team leaders.

Senior Luke Long rounded out the top four with the a score of 89, while junior Mason Ely posted a 90 on the first round of the year. Along with the top-5, Monmouth also brought a few individuals including sophomore Sam Gillen with a good round of 86 followed by junior Braden Williams coming into the clubhouse with another 89. Junior transfer Zach Ferris also played his first round with Monmouth College shooting 110. Your Fighting Scots will travel to Port Byron on Friday to play in the Duane Chanay Invite.

The Fighting Scots women’s golf team also had a great start to the year in their first tournament as they traveled to Highland Springs as Augustana College hosted their invite. The women had a rough first day of the tournament coming in with a team score of 353. The Scots would turn things around the second day, shooting 338 with terrific scores from sophomore Haley Hoekstra, shooting an 81 the first day and an 82 the second, placing her 6th overall in the field of golfers. The women also got a solid two-day score from freshman Mamie Amborsch carding a 90 the first day paired with an 82 the second.

The Scots also got scores from senior Carly Gonet and freshman Kristen Worner both shooting 91 the first day and 87 the second day for total of 183. Kaitlin Korf rounded off the top five with a 91, 88 for a total of 184 for the weekend.

The women look to take their first tournament successes with them into The Fighting Scot Invite this weekend as they host their first tournament of the year at Monmouth’s Gibson Woods.
