Men’s soccer takes on Central

September 8, 2017

Men’s soccer began their season this past weekend as they traveled to Central College and Webster College.

Monmouth looked to start their season on a high note as they took on Central College this past Friday in a road matchup. In the 9th minute Fighting Scots goalie Chase Stroud blocked a shot from Central, but the Dutch came away with the rebound and scored to go up 1-0. Monmouth would lock in on defense and keep Central from scoring the rest of the half, but the Scots couldn’t net a shot either. Monmouth headed into halftime down 1-0.

Both defenses looked strong for the first sixteen minutes of the second half, but in the 61st minute Central converted for their second goal of the match. Monmouth was able to prevent a lot of shots on goal for the rest of the match, but the Dutch were able to get a good shot off in the 72nd minute to push their lead to three. Monmouth was only able to get off eight shots in the matchup compared to Central’s twenty four as the Scots fell in their season opener 3-0.

On Sunday the Scots traveled to Webster University looking for their first win of the season. This match was a battle of the defenses as there was only one goal between both teams by the time that it ended. Monmouth’s came to play on defense and Webster was only able to get one shot off in the first thirty one minutes of the game, unfortunately that shot went to the back of the net to give Webster the edge early on.

Monmouth had 13 shots compared to Webster’s 10, but weren’t able to convert on any of them. Despite the Fighting Scots superb defense they lost the match 1-0. They will travel to Principia College on September 9th and then have their home opener on September 10th against the University of Dubuque.
