Women’s soccer began their season this past weekend with matchups against Rockford University and Central College.

On Friday the Fighting Scots hosted Rockford University in their season opener and it didn’t take long for Monmouth to score their first goal of the year. In the 12th minute Kara-Jade Gordon netted a shot to give Monmouth the lead. The Scots would score four more times in the next six minutes. Sophomore Makayla Shaw scored in the sixteenth minute off Gordon’s assist to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. Shaw and Gordon each scored again in the 18th minute followed by a score from Hannah Lingle. Up 5-0 the continued to put pressure on the Regents and would score twice more before halftime. The scoring slowed down in the second half and Monmouth would go on to win 7-0 in their season opener. The Scots got off 28 shots and only needed one save to shutout Rockford University.

The Fighting Scots looked to get their second win of the season on Sunday as they traveled to Pella, Iowa to take on Central College. In the 10th minute Central scored on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. The Scots couldn’t get anything going on offense and Monmouth went into the intermission down by one. The Dutch took a 2-0 lead sixteen minutes into the second half and eight minutes later they added another goal to go up 3-0. Neither team would score the rest of the match.

“I thought we had a strong start to the season,” said head coach Nicholas Rizzo. “We have been able to grow each day as a team, and you can tell that we have a group that cares about each other and each other’s successes.”

Monmouth only got off three shots in the matchup against Central, but is looking to bounce back against Principia College on Saturday.
