Volleyball hosts four-team tournament

September 8, 2017

Monmouth Volleyball began their season this past weekend by hosting the Fighting Scots Invite. The four-team tournament included: Monmouth College, Lincoln Christian University, Principia College & Iowa Wesleyan University.

The Scots would start off their season with a matchup against Lincoln Christian on Friday night. Monmouth would get off to a strong start in the first set with a 25-20 win. Lincoln Christian started heating up in the second set and would win the next two sets, both 25-18. The Scots needed a win if they wanted to push the match to a fifth set. Monmouth fought hard but weren’t able to win the fourth set, losing 25-22. Becca Dabrowski lead the team with twelve kills, while sophomore Carly Bergerhouse lead the Scots in digs with 22.

Monmouth might have lost their first match of the season three sets to one, but the Scots were able to bounce back the next day against Iowa Wesleyan University. In the first set of the match Iowa Wesleyan put up a good fight, but Monmouth came away with the 25-20 win. Looking to take advantage of the good start, the Scots came out with intensity in set two. They had twelve kills in the second set and won their second straight set 25-19, taking a commanding two sets to none lead. Iowa Wesleyan looked demoralized and defeated in the third set, only getting three kills and committing seven errors. The Fighting Scots took advantage of the lackluster play from the Tigers, taking the third set 25-16, and winning the match three sets to none.

The Scots looked to keep their good play going in their last match of the invite against Principia College. Set one was exciting, as the Scots were able to get eighteen kills and the Panthers had eleven of their own. The deciding factor was Principia’s zero errors compared to Monmouth’s eight. As a result Principia won set one 25-21. Monmouth would not back down though and win set two and set three 25-22, 25-16. In set four the Scots could end the match with a win, but the Panthers fought hard and narrowly won the set 26-24. In the decisive fifth set Principia made less mistakes and got double the kills in a 15-11 win, completing the comeback win. Bergerhouse lead both teams with 28 digs and Laura Dulee added nineteen assists for the Scots.

The Fighting Scots will travel to Terre Haute, IN this upcoming weekend to play four matches.
