Soccer teams take on Principia

September 15, 2017

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams traveled to Principia College on Saturday to take on the Panthers.

The men would take the field first and would get off to a good start on both sides of the ball. Goalie Chase Stroud had three saves in the first twelve minutes and the Scots were able to get on the board first. Monmouth’s goal came from sophomore Cadan Glattback in the 33rd minute.

The lead didn’t last long as Principia quickly took the ball down and scored in the 35th minute to tie the match. It looked like the score would be tied at halftime, but with less than three minutes remaining in the first half, Principia took the lead 2-1.

In the second half, the Scots got off eleven shots compared to Principia’s four, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. The Panthers would score three times in the half and take the win 5-1.

The women’s team played after the men and were aiming for a different outcome.

It only took five minutes for the Scots to take the lead with a goal from Kara-Jade Gordon. Just as they did in the men’s match, the Panthers came back quickly and tied it 1-1 in the 12th minute.

Gordon would connect on her second goal of the game in the 19th minute, and a minute later, Devin Cross found the back of the net to give Monmouth a 3-1 lead.

Principia would have no answer for all of Monmouth’s weapons on offense as Jacie Reis would get in on the scoring action, giving the Scots a 4-1 lead heading into the half.

Less than a minute into the second half, Makayla Shaw added to Monmouth’s lead off an assist from Natalie Wolski. Hannah Kugler and would add an insurance goal in the 52nd minute to give the Scots a 6-1 lead. Monmouth would go on to win 6-2 pushing their record to 3-1.

The Scots outshot the Panthers 27-10 in the victory and only had six fouls compared to Principia’s ten.

It will be a weekend full of soccer for Monmouth, as the women have two home matches, and the men will also host a match.

The women will host Greenville College on Friday and Buena Vista University on Saturday. The men will play on Sunday against Wabash College.
