Tennis takes on conference opponents

The women’s tennis team faced off against three conference opponents this past weekend.

On Saturday, the Scots took on Ripon College in a 9 AM matchup. Monmouth had a lot of success in the singles competition, winning four of the six matches.

Katherine Hinman was able to shut out Ripon’s Courtney Olson in straight sets. Morgan Holle and Lexi Tibbs were both able to win in two sets also: Holle winning 6-4 and 6-2 and Tibbs winning 6-1 in both sets.

Haley Johnston also won her singles competition in three sets. After taking set one 7-1, Johnston lost 1-6 in set two which brought up a decisive third set. Johnston was able to take set three easily 10-3.

The Scots won all three of their doubles competitions and would defeat Ripon 7-2.

After defeating Ripon for their first win of the season, the Scots headed an hour north to St. Norbert College for another conference matchup of the day.

Monmouth would not have as much success as they did earlier in the day, losing to St. Norbert 9-0.

After going 1-1 on Saturday, the Scots faced off against Lawrence University on Sunday. The singles competitions were long and intense.

Katherine Hinman lost a three set battle with Lawrence’s Lindsay Holsen. After splitting the first two sets, the two fought hard in the third set with Holsen eventually getting the best of Hinman 11-9. Natalie Curtis also lost a close three set matches 4-6, 6-3, and 8-10.

Monmouth would get a three set victory from Emma Johanns. After losing the first set 2-6, Johanns dominated the next two sets 6-3 and 10-3. Morgan Holle also came away with a singles victory 7-5 and 6-2.

The Scots fought hard and made the doubles competitions close, but could not come away with a victory in any of them. Lawrence University defeated Monmouth 7-2 to round out the Scots weekend against conference opponents.

Monmouth will have their home opener this Saturday as they take on Grinnell College and Cornell College.
