Monmouth’s women’s golf team would head to Illinois Wesleyan University this past weekend for the two-day IWU Fall Classic. The Scots would go up against some very stiff competition and compete very well against them.

Haley Hoekstra was the best scorer for the Scots on the first day. Hoekstra shot 82 which tied her for 40th. Mamie Ambrosch and Kristen Worner were right behind Hoekstra at the end of the first round. Ambrosch shot an 85 which left her tied for 60th at the end of the day. Worner shot an 87 and was tied for 69th place heading into day two.

Rounding out the top five for Monmouth was Kaniesha Whatley and Carly Gonet. Whatley finished round one with an 89 and tied for 76th while Gonet shot a 94 and was tied for 88th place. The Fighting Scots were tied for 13th at the end of the first round hoping to move up in the rankings on day two.

The Scots did not fall off much from day one to day two as they posted almost identical scores in both rounds. Hoekstra came back in the second round with another 82 giving her a 164 for the weekend. Ambrosch also posted an identical day two score shooting 85 in both rounds. Worner was two strokes higher on Sunday but still posted a strong day two score of 89.

Whatley and Gonet rounded out Monmouth’s scoring in round two. Whatley shot a 93 on the second day and a 182 for the weekend. Gonet was the only Fighting Scot to shoot better in the second round then they did in the first round. She shot a 92 on Sunday compared to a 94 on Saturday. Monmouth totaled 691 strokes for the weekend tying them with Carroll University for 13th.

“I believe overall as a team we performed great,” said sophomore Haley Hoekstra. “We tied our season-best score and I believe with the talent we have we can go to conference and compete well like last year.” Hoekstra continued by saying the team’s main goal is “just to go out there, play our own game, and have fun.”

The Fighting Scots will host the Monmouth College Invite this upcoming weekend at Gibson Woods. Tee off will be at 1 PM on Saturday.
