Soccer takes on Wabash College

September 22, 2017

The men’s soccer team had two matchups this past week. Last Thursday, the Scots took on Illinois Wesleyan University at Peacock Memorial Athletic Park.

The first 23 minutes of the match was a defensive battle, but Illinois Wesleyan would break through with a goal to put them up 1-0. Monmouth would give up two more goals in the next five minutes and were looking at a 3-0 deficit.

Illinois Wesleyan would score their fourth consecutive goal in the 34th minute, and it looked like Monmouth would head into the half down 4-0. With less than a minute left in the half, Agustin Miranda found the back of the net off a rebound to cut the Titans lead to three going into the break.

Early on in the second half, Illinois Wesleyan would push the lead back to four with a 54th-minute goal. That would be the last goal the Knights would score, but Monmouth would not be able to convert on any of their seven shot attempts in the second half. Illinois Wesleyan would take the win over Monmouth 5-1.

On Sunday, the Scots faced off against Wabash College in another home matchup. As it has many times this season, Monmouth’s defense shined and held tough through most of the match.

The first half would not feature one goal and it looked like the second half would end without one also. With less than one minute to go in regulation, Wabash broke the scoring drought with a goal. Monmouth didn’t have enough time to respond and lost 1-0. Chase Stroud had five saves on the day and only committed 11 fouls compared to Wabash’s 17.

This weekend Monmouth is hosting two matches. The Fighting Scots will take on Ripon College on Saturday, and on the following day, they will face off against St. Norbert College. Both matches begin at 3:30 PM.
