Volleyball handily defeats Rockford

The women’s volleyball team for Monmouth College traveled to Galesburg to play in the Knox Invitational this past weekend. The women won their first of four games at the invitational but would drop the remaining three games to finish out invitational play.

The Scots started tournament play strong on Friday evening as they blew through Rockford by winning all three sets of the match. Becca Dabrowksi led the attack for the Scots with 11 kills of the night. Not far behind were fellow Fighting Scots Bridgett Rayhill and Lauren Sperry, who collected eight kills for the match.

Later Friday evening, Monmouth took on the University of Dubuque for its final match of the night. The Scots would fall in three sets as Dubuque claimed the sets 25-16, 25-14, and 25-20 for a clean sweep to win the match.

On Saturday, Monmouth would start the day with a 3-1 loss to Macalester College. The match was closer than the final tally. Macalester won set one 25-17 before the Scots would rally to win set two with a score of 25-23. During set three, Macalester edged by Monmouth 25-21, and in the fourth set, Macalester won 25-19 to claim the match.

In the final showdown of the weekend, Monmouth was narrowly defeated by Alverno in a faceoff that went the full five sets. Alverno won the first set, but it took an extra play to do so as they won 29-27. Monmouth would take set two with a 25-18 win but would surrender set three to Alverno as they narrowly lost 25-23. In set four, the Scots made quick work of Alverno, winning 25-14. The fifth and final set would go down to the wire, as Alverno would eke out a 15-13 final set victory to claim the match.

Monmouth will travel to Mount Pleasant, Iowa for two games on Saturday, September 23rd before hosting Robert Morris University on Tuesday, September 26th.
