Volleyball sweeps Iowa Wesleyan

This past weekend the volleyball team traveled to Mount Pleasant, IA on Saturday to take on Greenville College and Iowa Wesleyan University.

The Scots took on Greenville in their first matchup of the day in a back-and-forth game. The two teams went point for point with each other for most of the first set but the Panthers would pull away and defeat the Scots 25-21.

In the second set, the Scots couldn’t get anything going, coming away with only seven kills compared to the Panthers 14. Monmouth also had six more errors than Greenville in the set and the Panthers would come away with the win 25-12.

Monmouth bounced back and won the next two sets. Greenville made both of them close but the Scots would prevail, winning 25-22 in both sets.

In the fifth and deciding set, Monmouth would dig themselves in a hole early with a 13-7 deficit. They would claw their way back and take the lead 15-14. The teams went back and forth and the set was tied 20-20 before Greenville took two straight points and won 22-20.

Greenville defeated Monmouth in five sets but the Scots still had one game to play. They would take on the host school Iowa Wesleyan University aiming to end their day on a high note.

The Scots would start off the game on a 7-0 run and at one point had a ten point lead. Monmouth would take the first set easily 25-17.

The Tigers would play better in the second set and held a 15-9 lead over the Scots. Monmouth would go on a run and tie the set up at 15 and Iowa Wesleyan would only score one more point the rest of the set. The Scots would win their second straight set with a 25-16 victory.

In the third frame, Monmouth was looking for a three-set sweep while Iowa Wesleyan tried to force a fourth set. The Fighting Scots would take control early and take a 10-5 lead and never look back. Monmouth would take the third set easily 25-15 and defeat Iowa Wesleyan in straight sets.

On Saturday, the Scots will head to Beloit, WI to take on Beloit College in a conference matchup.
