The Fighting Scots’ volleyball team was in action twice this past week against conference opponents. On Saturday, Monmouth traveled to Beloit College to take on the Buccaneers. On Tuesday, the Scots headed west to take on Cornell College.

Against Beloit College, the Scots started off hot with a 25-20 victory in the first set. Beloit had zero errors in the set, but Monmouth had 13 kills compared to the Buccaneers’ 11.

The second set was more of the same as Beloit had no errors once again, but Monmouth won in the kills category and went up two sets to none with another 25-20 win. The Scots looked to put away Beloit in the third set and come away from the match with a sweep.

Beloit had other plans in mind as they finally took a set from Monmouth with a 25-21 win. In the fourth set, the Scots had a game-high 15 kills, but Beloit squeaked out another victory 25-21. After winning the first two sets, the Fighting Scots were now in a decisive fifth set against the Buccaneers.

Despite only having five kills in the final set, Monmouth had no errors and came away with a 15-11 victory. Beloit made the match interesting, but the Scots eventually got the win and set their sights on the Cornell match.

On Tuesday, the Scots traveled to Mount Vernon, IA to take on the 14-5 Cornell Rams. The first set went back and forth early on, but Cornell would go on a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Scots would keep themselves close for most of the set but the Rams would take it 25-14.

Early in the second set, the Scots would take a 5-4 lead but Cornell would respond by scoring three straight points to take a 7-5 lead. Monmouth stayed right with Cornell until the Rams scored four straight points to take a 16-11 lead. The Scots would cut the lead down to three but that was as close as they would get as Cornell won the set 25-20.

Down two sets to none Monmouth needed a win to stay alive. The Scots would fall behind early and never recover. Cornell would only commit one error in the set and come up with 13 kills as they took the third set by a score of 25-12.

The Fighting Scots will host three conference opponents this upcoming week. On Friday they will face off against Lawrence University and the next day they will be back in Glennie Gymnasium to take on Ripon College. After a four day rest, the Scots will face Illinois College on Wednesday.
