Men’s soccer wins on Senior Day

October 27, 2017

The Vikings of Lawrence University made the trip down from Appleton, WI for a conference matchup against the Scots in their final home game of the season.

Sophomores Duh Cem and Cadan Glattback assisted junior Agustin Miranda to open up the score for the Scots in the 36th minute. Monmouth took a 1-0 lead into halftime and netted their second goal of the day on a PK from sophomore Lucas Sondgeroth in the 75th minute.

The Vikings tried to rally late, finding the back of the net in the 83rd minute but were unable to find the equalizer as the Scots prevailed 2-1 on senior day. “It was the icing on the cake for a long career filled with ups and downs at Monmouth,” said senior captain Adam Stenzel. “I couldn’t have asked for a better result.”

Monmouth then headed up to Chicago on Tuesday night for a non-conference game against Illinois Institute of Technology. It was a cold and rainy night in downtown Chicago for a very evenly matched game between the Scots and the Scarlet Hawks.

At the half, possession was split near evenly between the two teams and the shot count was 6-6. Late in the second half, Monmouth’s best scoring opportunity was sophomore Jack Ressler’s free kick from 20 yards out that ricocheted off the top crossbar.

With overtime looming and both teams frantically looking for the go-ahead goal, IIT sent in a shot saved by keeper Chase Stroud, a senior. On the rebound, there was a scrum in the box and the Scarlet Hawks squeaked the ball into the back of the net to seal a 1-0 victory.

Monmouth plays their last game of the season at Grinnell College this Saturday against Grinnell College.
