Men’s water polo hosts tournament

November 3, 2017

This past weekend the men’s water polo team hosted a two-day tournament. On Saturday, the Scots took on Mercyhurst University and Salem International University. The following morning, Monmouth was back in the pool to take on McKendree University.

In their first matchup against Mercyhurst University, the Scots played even with the Lakers early on and only trailed by one heading into the second quarter. Monmouth would only net one goal in the quarter compared to Mercyhurst’s five and fell behind 9-4 halfway through the match.

The Scots would find their rhythm in the third quarter, finding the back of the net three times. Julius Bradsfield, Jake Hall, and Jesus Aguirre all scored to cut into the Lakers lead.

Aguirre would score again in the fourth quarter along with a goal from Kurt Holzer, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Mercyhurst. The Scots lost their first match of the weekend 14-9.

The Scots took on Salem International University in their second match of the weekend. They got off to a slow start, only netting one goal in the first quarter and falling behind 5-1. Julius Bradsfield scored twice in the second quarter and Hall added one as well, but the Scots still trailed 12-4 after two quarters.

Hall and Bradsfield both added two more goals before the match ended, while Holzer added three in the fourth quarter, and Jared Hankinson found the back of the net as well. Salem International’s offense couldn’t be stopped though and would take the win 22-12.

The next morning, the Scots were back in the pool to take on McKendree University. Hall added another goal in the first quarter, his sixth of the weekend, but Monmouth would be trailing 5-1 at the end of the period. The Scots would score five times in the second quarter; three of them coming from Bradsfield, but the Bearcats scored five of their own and held a 10-6 lead halfway through the match.

Bradsfield and Hall would combine for five goals in the second half but the Scots would fall to McKendree 17-11.Monmouth will head to Erie, PA this upcoming weekend for the CWPA Tournament.
