The Fighting Scots men’s basketball team traveled to Jacksonville, IL this past Wednesday for their season opener. Monmouth took on MacMurray College looking to start their season off with a victory.

In the first half, the Highlanders got off to a strong start and held a 5-2 lead two minutes in. Monmouth senior Paul Engo III would tie the game up followed by a bucket from senior Austin Holman. The two teams went back and forth and neither squad could gain an edge.

The Highlanders held the lead for eight straight minutes at one point until Engo III made a fast break layup off Justin Aluya’s steal to take back the lead. With less than two minutes to go in the half, the Scots had just a one-point lead. Thanks to a few free throws and a three-pointer from Lamont Mitchell, the Fighting Scots headed into the locker room with a 39-33 lead at the half.

Less than thirty seconds into the second half, Engo III connected on a three-pointer to increase Monmouth’s lead to nine points. After a few minutes of back and forth play, Holman and Mitchell each connected on field goals to increase their lead to double digits.

Every time MacMurray tried to claw their way back into the game the Fighting Scots would knock down a jumper to halt the rally. With nine minutes to go in the game, freshman DJ Swift drilled a three-pointer to give the Scots their largest lead of the game 60-44. Will Jones knocked in a three of his own less than a minute later to increase the lead even more.

Monmouth would eventually get the victory 75-57 as they took down MacMurray on the road. The Scots shot 49% on field goals for the game and four Scots scored in the double digits to lead the way in their season opening win.

The Fighting Scots will have their home opener this Saturday against Coe College. Tip-off will be at 4 p.m in Glennie Gymnasium.
