Scots take on Augustana in opener

November 17, 2017

The Fighting Scots women’s basketball team was in action for the first time this season this past Wednesday. Monmouth began their season against Augustana in a home matchup.

The Vikings took control early as they took a 10-4 lead a little over three minutes into the game. Augustana continued to build on their lead until a pair of three-pointers from Yvonne Ornelas and Keri Dodson brought the Scots within striking distance. The Scots were not able to stifle Augustana’s high-powered offense though and the Vikings would hold a 27-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Scots scored four straight points to start the second quarter but the Vikings would go on a 7-0 run of their own to open up an 18 point lead. Augustana would continue to build on their lead and would be up 50-27 at the end of the first half.

It looked like Augustana was going to run away with this one as they scored two straight buckets to start the third quarter, but the Scots weren’t about to give this game up easily. Senior Maddie Dohleman hit a jumper and sophomore Jeni Crain followed with four points of her own to cut into Augustana’s lead. Crain would score seven more points before the quarter was over while Becca Gallis and Izy Todd would add a couple three-pointers. Going into the final frame the Scots had cut the deficit to 19 points.

The Scots continued their hot shooting in the fourth quarter. A jumper by Crain and a three-pointer from Stephanie Williams brought the Scots within 14 points. That’s as close as Monmouth would get as Augustana locked in and increased their lead back to 25 points. The Scots shot 80% on free throws and connected on 44% of their second half three-pointers, but Augustana came away with a 95-70 victory.

The Fighting Scots will be back in action this Tuesday at Eureka College. Tip-off against the Red Devils will be at 6 p.m.
