The Fighting Scots women’s basketball team came away with two wins this past week. Both victories were against conference opponents, which boosted the team’s conference record to 4-8 this season.

Monmouth’s first matchup of the week was against Beloit College last Saturday. The Scots took control of the game quickly as they went up 8-4 four minutes into the game. Beloit would tie the game up at twelve a piece before the Scots went on a 6-0 run lead by Maddie Dohleman and Shayne Smith. Monmouth hit two three-pointers in the final minute to give them an eleven point edge after the first quarter.

Beloit would cut the lead to three going into the second half but the Scots would rally in the third and push their lead back to eight points. The Buccaneers would cut the lead to two with six minutes left in the game, but Monmouth would hold them off and take the win 72-64. The Scots’ tough defense held Beloit to 40% shooting from the field and 30% from the three-point range.

The Scots’ second conference game of the week was a home matchup against Grinnell College. Grinnell would take an early 3-0 lead, but Monmouth went on an 18-2 run to take a commanding lead halfway through the first quarter. Both teams played even for the rest of the first half and Monmouth headed to the locker rooms with a ten point lead.

Grinnell would cut Monmouth’s lead to seven in the third quarter but the Scots would finish the quarter on a 17-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Fighting Scots made eight threes in the game and shot 50% from behind the arc to easily defeat Grinnell 80-63.

Monmouth’s next game will be at St. Norbert this Saturday at 3:00 PM. The Scots will then have two home games on Monday and Wednesday. They will take on Eureka College on Monday night and then face Cornell College on Wednesday night.
